This wallpaper is typical of the period 1860-1880, when medallion patterns without shadows and depth effects became popular. This was a reaction against the three-dimensional drawn wallpapers of the previous decades, which were now considered to be overly realistic. New Renaissance wallpapers were often decorated with ornamentations in the form of stylised plant motifs, usually taken from medieval and Renaissance oriental fabrics.
